Thanks to the Church, which threatened all those with a mind to follow in his footsteps with fires and brimstone, the myth of Don Juan spread far and wide and inspired a host of works. Mozart’s opera, based on a libretto by Da Ponte and inspired by the same ideals that would shortly lead to the French Revolution, sheds light on the profound philosophical and ethical dimensions of its subject-matter.
