20 Feb 2010: Manos Mpitsakakis

Mpitsakakis-Feb-2010-system

By Kyriakos Kougioumtzoglou

The entry…

It was a nice February evening with rather warm weather for this time of the year and also a special night for ACA members since today we had the monthly meeting at Manos Mpitsakakis home.

Manos house is just one kilometer away from the sea on the eastern part of Attica.

When I arrived only five other people were there, four ACA members and one friend of Manos. The house had a super nice smell… obviously something very tasty was cooking in the kitchen.

Manos told me that he was expecting lots of people in this meeting, both ACA members and friends from other audio societies and audio forums since he is a very active member in many of them.

With my first Scotch on hand I went down to the basement were the system was warming up playing a Sinatra tune in low volume.

Velissarios of TLA audio, was there talking with Dimitris of Ypsilon Electronics, for the new line of electronics by Ypsilon and marketing actions that had to be done for both audio manufacturers.

The system…

Mpitsakakis-Feb-2010-pic-09Manos has a dedicated listening room in the basement of his house that is partly sonically treated. This is one of the ACA system that I didn’t have the opportunity to listen in the past by myself or in a ACA meeting but the set-up looks good to me in the paper and the speakers are definitely from the top league.

System Description

  • Speakers: Kef reference 205 ('06)
  • Preamplifier: Audio research ref3
  • Power Amplifier: Geroukis pset monoblocks 'gaku-on' replicas(2 vt-4c/ch 70w rms/ch)
  • Analogue source: Nottingham analogue space 294 / ace space 294 arm / shelter 5000 / blue note de medici phono
  • Digital source: Sony scd xa5400 es
  • Cables: All xlo reference
  • Stands: DIY for Amps - Chinese no name Rack for other Electronics

The audition…

Manos had selected a listening program in both vinyl records and CD formats.

The music was a variety of Greek and foreign songs that also had two pieces from the classical repertoire.

We listened for about an hour the selected vinyl records and CD’s, switching from Jazz to Classic and from Pop to rock.

On the end of the music program all the listeners stand up clapping with a wide smile of satisfaction.

To tell you the truth, since I didn’t have any experience of Manos’s system, I was not prepared for such a good performance, but my experience was very positive after all.

Listening Program

  • KENNY ROGERS - THE STRANGER (VINYL)
  • GABRIELA LENA FRANK - MESTIZO WALTZ KEITH LOCKHART/Utah Symphony (CD)
  • OSCAR PETERSON - GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE (SOLO PIANO) (VINYL)
  • SARAH VAUNGHAN - TEA FOR TWO (CD)
  • TOMASO ALBINONI - CONCERTO IN D MINOR FOR OBOE (OP9 NR2) (VINYL)
  • KATIE WEBSTER - PUSSYCAT MOAN (VINYL)
  • MIKE SILVER - OLD FASHIONED SATURDAY NIGHT (CD)
  • HARIS AND PANOS KATSIMIHAS - SANTA IRINI (VINYL)

The dinner…

Mpitsakakis-Feb-2010-pic-08After listening and about half an hour of social time the dinner was served.
As I told you in the beginning the house had a super nice smell and was not surprise to see the beautiful table full of food all made and prepared by Manos wife Kaiti.

Kaiti is well known cook throughout our society since her tasty foods are very well appreciated in every occasion.

The ending…

We stayed at Manos’s house up until midnight listening to some tunes and drinking red wine.

On behalf of ACA and all the rest of the friends, I would like to thank Manos and his wife for the wonderful evening.
