30 Jul 2011: Dimitris Klonis

Klonis-July-2011-system

By Tasos Syrigos

Quality, that’s the only word that comes in my mind regarding each & every aspect of D. Klonis July meeting.
Beginning with a warm welcome Dimitri made us feel at home right from the start.

Klonis-July-2011-pic-01He then raised everything to a higher level with his impeccable hospitality; excellent food, excellent drinks, excellent music. All these in a house that reflected Dimitris’ personality & lifestyle, a house that was simple and yet full of good taste; open yet warm, bright yet discrete.

Starting with music Dimitri presented a small yet versatile program as follows:

Music Program Highlights

  • BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (COLUMBIA)
  • RUBEN GONZALES/INTRODUCING RUBEN GONZALES/COMO SIEUTO /YO(WORLD CIRQUIT)
  • KATIE MELUA/CALL OF THE SEARCH/THE CLOSEST THING TO CRAZY(SABC 3)
  • MOZART/SONATE FOR VIOLIN & PIANO K.V 378/ KAGAN-RICHTER (MELODY IA)
  • AMY WINEHOUSE/BACK TO BLACK/TEARS DRY IN THEIR OWN WAY (UNIVERSAL)
  • LOU RAWLS/AT LAST/ IF I WERE A MAGICIAN (BLUE NOTE)
  • DIRE STRAITS/ ON EVERY STREET (VERTIGO)
  • TCHAICOVSKY/ FRANCESCA DA RIMINI/ CHAILLY-CLEVELAND (LONDON)

The listening...

Klonis-July-2011-pic-02Now, regarding music reproduction what I most liked was the equal presentation of all music styles.
What I mean is that the system was not choosy to the type of music, it reproduced finely everything, from rock to classical music.

The other thing I really liked was that the good result came out from trivial, non audiophile recordings, although previous experiences from large ribbons like DIVA’S shows that they benefit a lot with audiophile recordings.

Klonis-July-2011-pic-03For the rest I’ll not bother you with details, the set up was a classic APOGEE DIVA set up; lean sounding, space, width & height on the scene. Vocals were warm but not mellow, good articulation, formal balance & flow on strings was fine, micro & macrodynamics more from satisfying.

Perhaps the only drawback was the absence of an analogue source which Dimitri promised us soon.

System Description

  • Speakers: Apogee Acoustics 'Diva'
  • Active X/O: Apogee Acoustics DAX 2-way
  • Preamplifier: Musical Fidelity Nu-vista (Nuvistor tubes)
  • Power amplifier: 2X Musical Fidelity 'Nu-vista 300'
  • Digital source: Musical Fidelity 'A5'
  • Wiring: Custom flat copper

Conclusion...

All these concluded to a wonderful evening and an unforgettable club meeting. Interesting people, nice long conversations, lots of laughs and good music.

That’s the essence of a club, of any club that respects itself and its members, quality time with interesting people.

Last but not least, since were an Audiophile Club, is music and its reproduction.

Thank you Dimitris for the wonderful evening.
