Cary Audio SLI-80HS integrated amplifier
New York City is forever being born. Lately, transnational capitalists are turning Manhattan into both an investment vehicle and playground for their platinum-level appetites. As real estate developments blot the city's skyline with competing glass-and-metal towers...

Recommended Components: 2019 Fall Edition
Products listed here have been formally reviewed in Stereophile, and we have determined them to be among the finest available in each of four or five quality classes. Whether a component is listed in Class A or Class D (or E), we consider it to be a genuinely recommendable product.

Amazon Music Goes High-Rez
The era of streaming in CD-quality and hi-rez music has arrived at one of the world's major subscription streaming services, complete with a free 90-day trial.

Spirited Away by Music
Yup, you're in a strange position, all right. You're in love with a girl who is no more.--Haruki Murakami. The quote above, from Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore, is addressed to Kafka, a 15-year-old boy who has fallen in love with the teenage ghost of an older woman.

Vertigo
In Alfred Hitchcock's great film Vertigo, filmed in San Francisco in 1957, the protagonist, Scottie, played by James Stewart, becomes obsessed with Madeleine, played by Kim Novak. Scottie, a retired detective, suffers from a disabling case of acrophobia, which becomes a critical if tenuous plot point.

From The Archives: Four 3rd-Generation CD players: Adcom, Magnavox, Onkyo, Yamaha
I once told Stereophile publisher Larry Archibald it might be worth, say, a 10% loss in sound quality with CD not to have to jump up and turn over the damned record. Sometimes a CD saves you from popping up twice--Mahler's Fifth or Bruckner's Seventh on a single disc instead of three LP sides--or three times--Mozart's Magic Flute on three CDs instead of 6 LP sides. That might be worth a 15% sacrifice.

My Journey to Jazz
Like most older teens growing up in the South in the late 1970s, I had two poles of rock and roll heroes: The Allman Brothers Band and ZZ Top on one side, Yes and King Crimson on the other.

From The J. Gordon Holt Archives: Garrard 301 & Thorens TD 124 turntables
Slightly higher rumble than the Thorens TD 124, but equally low speed variation and high dependability. New ones may require some break-in and occasionally some adjustment when purchased, but from that time on, occasional lubrication is all they will need for a very long time.

From The J. Gordon Holt Archives: Audio & Design M9BA tonearm
Back in the days of pre-stereo high fidelity, when a 6-gram phono pickup was considered to be "featherweight," the best universal-type tonearm we knew of was a bulky, very professional-looking device made by Gray Labs and designated the Model 108.

Dancing on the Edge: Keith Jarrett on Music & Art
Years before I moved to Santa Fe, where I eventually became Stereophile's copyeditor, assistant editor, and first music editor, I lived in Boston, Massachusetts. There, I'd spent a year as the in-house typesetter, copyeditor, and book-review editor of East West Journal and two years after I'd left, managing editor Meg Seaker called to ask if I wanted to interview Keith Jarrett for the magazine.

A Magic Flute Delights and Surprises
A divine amalgam of joy and solemnity and one of Mozart's most spiritually elevated creations, Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) brings each generation's finest conductors and singers to the microphone. Now, Metropolitan Opera conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin and tenor-cum-baritone Rolando Villazon and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe add to their series of Mozart recordings

SVS SB-3000 powered subwoofer
SVS's recently introduced SB-3000 is a compact powered subwoofer that's $600 cheaper, a few cubic inches smaller, and 37lb lighter than the model it replaces, the SVS SB13-Ultra.

Music in the Round #99: Revel & exaSound
There is necessity as well as comfort in having a long-term reference recordings and, system. The necessity derives from the familiarity with the reference that allows for comparisons and contrasts with the equipment being tested.
