Stereophile October 2021

Stereophile-October-2021

2nd Edition

Toronto Audiofest 2021 Show Report!
Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. You could feel it in the air, the vibe; it felt like a mixture of relief and gratitude to be back among fellow audio passionates, reuniting with old friends and familiar faces, and seeing new faces, some of them young, with wide eyes and a spring in their step.

Recording of November 2021: J.S. Bach: Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello
Why is Stereophile publishing its fourth review (at least) in three years of a recording of Bach's Six Cello Suites? Partly it's because the suites, which were composed ca 1720 but remained in obscurity until a young Pablo Casals rediscovered them in a secondhand sheet music store in Barcelona in 1890, contain some of the most joyous, moving, and profound music in the Western classical music canon.

Estelon Forza loudspeaker
You've got your 2001: A Space Odyssey speaker, which of course is a tall, black, featureless monolith. Then there's your wooden "Who's buried inside?" speaker, your "R-I-C-O-L-A" speaker, your enema bag or double-inverted enema bag speaker, your menacing hooded-Klansman speaker, your "looks like a robot, praying mantis, or Transformer" speaker (mine), and your "Does it leave a slime trail?" speaker (looks like a snail).

Glory Days
I've got a music problem. Specifically, I've got a rock music problem. It's a true cliche--that is, a cliche that happens to be true: Rock music, in almost all its forms, is young people's music.

Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems Progression M550 monoblock power amplifier
We audiophiles so frequently get caught up in the pursuit of perfection that some have attempted to rebrand high-end audio as "perfectionist audio." But is it even possible for a single piece of audio gear, let alone an entire audio system, to attain perfection when there's no common agreement as to what "perfection" means?

Analog Corner #315: The Electrical Cure
Rex Hungerford, Edward DeVito, and Craig Bradley rode into town last week and, together with Audioquest's Garth Powell, solved all the electrical problems that have plagued my audio system for years.

Gramophone Dreams #53: RAAL-requisite HSA-1b headphone/loudspeaker amplifier
Today is Monday. Since Saturday, I have changed the amplifier driving my Falcon Gold Badge LS3/5a speakers three times--from the Parasound Halo A21+ (250Wpc into 8 ohms) to the Pass Labs XA25 (>25Wpc into 8 ohms) to the Elekit TU-8600S (9Wpc into 8 ohms). Now I am listening to the Falcons via the just-arrived RAAL-requisite HSA-1b headphone and speaker amplifier.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Deja vu Sweepstakes!
Register to win one of two Rhino Deja vu 50th Anniversary Deluxe D2C Vinyl Editions (value $250.00 each), or a limited edition 16"x20" Henry Diltz photo signed by all four members of CSNY (value: $1,500/priceless) we are giving away.

Stenheim Alumine Three loudspeaker
The made-in-Switzerland Stenheim Alumine Three floorstanding loudspeaker sells for $32,900/pair. It is not only the most expensive component I've reviewed for Stereophile; it costs more than 10 times (!) as much as my $3000/pair reference Falcon Acoustics Gold Badge LS3/5a speaker.

Re-Tales #13: Getting your hi-fi fix(ed)
Lately I've been hearing stories about people getting back into hi-fi, often from the people themselves. Some are buying new gear, but others have dug out and dusted off older equipment.

Antipodes Audio K50 music server
On the face of it, playing and streaming digital music files is a straightforward process. You direct data from various sources--some local, some "in the cloud"--perhaps via a reclocker/signal conditioner to a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). "And the music comes out here."

Dirac Live 3 room-correction software
Adoption of DSP-based speaker-and-room correction in home theater--a parallel universe to audiophilia--is almost universal. It's easy to understand why. Home theater matured in the digital age.
