2nd Edition

Lovely Recordings Hosted by Rusty Miller
The late 80s and early 90s were tough times for a teenage music nerd. Pop radio and MTV was all hair metal and watered-down hip-hop, there was no internet to foster discovery of new sounds, and the grunge movement had not yet ignited.

Download of the Week: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Nick Cave's son Arthur fell to his death last year. Arthur was 15. Skeleton Tree is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds new album, released last week, and it is really sad, beautiful, and interesting. I'm nearly afraid to let it all in.

Downloads & Availability: A Public Service Announcement
When looking for music downloads to purchase, I search the following sites . . .

Lovely Recordings Hosted by Anthony C.
I've appreciated reading Mr. Lavorgna's writings on all topics since stumbling onto his website "Twittering Machines" years ago while searching for more information about PJ Harvey (listen) or maybe it was Don Cherry's album Art Deco (listen).

Download of the Week: Angel Olsen
We last heard from Angel back in 2014 with Burn Your Fire for No Witness about which I said, "There's a nice oddity and range to her singing that against initial impressions sound convincing and delightful. I believe her and that's nice." I am even more convinced by My Woman. That's nicer.

The totaldac d1-six: An Appreciation
Here I sit listening to my d1-six DAC from totaldac, yes I bought it and yes I sold things (many things) to make my bank account fuller, and I am meaningfully delighted, over and over again. Listening to familiar albums is especially telling as I am hearing them, perhaps better stated as hearing into them, as if they have been refreshed, refurbished, with all those years of crappy digital washed away.

1st Edition

Sony's New Signature Series
Battery Studios is home to master mastering engineer and three-time Grammy winner Mark Wilder so it was with great pleasure to reply in the affirmative to Sony's invitation to hear about and hear their new Signature Series components.

Lovely Recordings Hosted by Gary D'Amato (Part 2)
As I mentioned in my short bio in my first batch of Lovely Recordings, Roxy Music changed all that I knew about music. This is Bryan Ferry's 4th solo LP, recorded during a hiatus from Roxy Music. Amazingly under appreciated by the critics, this record is, imo, among his finest work.

Download of the Week: Einsturzende Neubauten
So...I was putting my new DAC through its paces, OK that's potentially misleading as you could interpret that to mean playing various pieces of music to test my new DACs audiophileness when in fact I was playing some of my most loved music. One of which is Einsturzende Neubauten's Tabula Rasa (Thirsty Ear, 1993).

AudioQuest DragonFly Red and DragonFly Black
I think it's safe to say to say that the DragonFly has been a success so you'd think its creators, Steve Silberman of AudioQuest and Gordon Rankin of Wavelength Audio, would rest on these laurels. But they obviously didn't, seeing as we're here to talk about two new DragonFlys: the Black and the Red.

This Is Sting's Brain On Music: Measuring the representational space of music with fMRI
One of my favorite writers on music and the brain, Daniel J. Levitin, also counts Sting among his fans. When Sting's recent tour took him to Montreal, home of McGill University where Dr. Levintin works, he reached out to Levintin and they got together for some fun along with Scott T. Grafton of the University of Santa Barbara who co-authored this research paper.

Lovely Recordings Hosted by Erik Martin
The selections below have given me years of transcendent enjoyment. For me, music is ultimately a spiritual experience. But sharing music is actually the best part. In fact, most of the works listed here were shared with me by my dear friend (and incredible musician) Dominique Leone. So, thanks Dominique, and you're welcome AudioStream readers ;)

Download of the Week: Marion Brown
Imagine Debussy digested by Webern transposed and informed by Coltranes, John & Alice, played by some of the finest jazz players on familiar and unfamiliar instruments and you begin to get a mental grab on Marion Brown's Afternoon of a Georgia Faun released in August of 1970 on ECM.
