AudioStream January 2016

AudioStream-logo

2nd Edition

Lovely Recordings: Hosted By Richard Crimi
My musical sense runs the gamut; from pop/rock through classical and jazz and on into world music, and then some. I have plenty of “chestnuts” and popular things in my collection of CD's, vinyl and now bits, and I enjoy it all. But perhaps I get the most satisfaction and meaning out of discovering and devouring lovely hidden gems. So some of these you may know and others hopefully you can discover, and maybe pass along a few yourself for the rest of us too.

Download of the Week: Julia Kent
We first met Julia Kent back in 2013 amid a group of like-minded music. Her latest release, Asperity from October, 2015, continues her tradition of looped cello, electronics, and found sounds but here Kent digs into, shall we say, a more furious sound.

Serene Audio Talisman Speakers
A Baga snake from Guinea or a woozy Brancusi? The more I looked at the Serene Audio Talisman Speakers sitting atop my desk, the more I liked them. The striking curvaceous single-driver Talismans, whose outsides are made from "sturdy and acoustically dead" 3/4" bamboo and leather-covered MDF, may lead one to think they're not a serious speaker: All looks, no sonics. Appearances can be deceiving.

MQA Continued
As I foretold in the comments on my MQA CES posts, here is information on MQA that is intended to address some of the questions that have come up regarding implementation. My focus here is on the nuts and bolts of MQA for listeners.

Lovely Recordings: Hosted By Gary D'Amato
My musical tastes changed drastically on August 12, 1972 while at Madison Square Garden for Jethro Tull: we were sitting way down front, center stage, maybe 15 rows back in great seats salivating for Tull. The opening act was a band I had never heard, nor heard of, ROXY MUSIC. Long story short, a friend looked over at me after they did a short 30 minute show, and said, "Fuck Tull".

Download of the Week: David Bowie
We all know we're going to die. Most of us just don't know when. For those that do, and for those who imagine they will, change from the everyday is the order of the day. David Bowie was a beautiful soul, there are lots of them, but he was also a luminous soul of which there are not so many. We are fortunate to bath in the light of such luminous souls.

CES 2016: The Wrap!
CES 2016 tested many an audiophile, and continues to do so, with one word--Ready. Roon- and MQA-Ready products seemed to generate the most interest...for good reason; Roon makes browsing your music and the music from Tidal's 3 million plus tracks fun, and from what I heard, MQA makes listening to digital files more fun. But...you can't have -Ready products now. Dammit!

Complete CES 2016 Coverage
Michael Lavorgna looks for everything new that has digital audio run thorugh it and reports live from the show in Las Vegas.

Download of the Week: Bob Dylan
I love Bob Dylan. From 1962 to 1975 he has me all in, hook, line, and sinker. After that, I lose track. Except: World Gone Wrong. World Gone Wrong, released in 1993 on Columbia, his last record to seal his decades old contract, has had me in its grips since I first heard it. We're looking at Bob his guitar and harmonica, singin' folk and blues classics. To my ears, it's classic.

AudioStream's Products of the Year 2015
Why a Product of the Year? The easy answer is there always is one, in our minds, so why not share. This year was no exception, and while we are clearly living in a golden age of great music and playback abundance, a few things have stood out and above the rest. Without further ado, we give you AudioStream's Products of the Year 2015...

Ayre Acoustics Codex USB DAC + Headphone Amp + Digital Preamp
The Ayre Acoustics Codex is the newest DAC to be released from this well known high end manufacturer located in Boulder, Colorado. Some might initially conclude that the Codex is a stripped-down version of the more expensive Ayre QB-9 DSD DAC, but they would be wrong.

Qobuz Offers Hi-Rez Streaming via Google Chromecast Audio
Earlier this month, Google announced 24-bit/96kHz support for its Chromecast Audio device. Thanks to reader Chris L. for the heads up on this new news from Qobuz: Qobuz Sublime subscribers (219.99£/year) will soon be able to stream their purchases, including up to 24/96 content, on Google's $35 Chromecast Audio device.

Lovely Recordings: Hosted By Marshall Bolton
Michael seems to believe in stories.... So here is a true story from Denmark.... It was a dark and stormy night--all day long... Everybody was suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. They were SAD. Very SAD.

Metrum Acoustics Pavane
The Metrum Acoustics Pavane is the company's flagship DAC. Like the recently reviewed and well loved Musette (see review), the Pavane relies on Metrum's own Transient R2R ladder DAC One modules to convert Ds to As. While the Musette uses two, the Pavane employs a total of eight DAC modules, four per channel. Unlike the Musette, the digital data feeding those DAC chips passes through the company's FPGA-resident "forward correction module". What's it correcting?

The Barn: The Final Version
Our barn's overall interior dimensions are roughly 35' x 45' x 12. My listening/work space is now 17' x 35'. These final dimensions were accomplished by moving well over 100 boxes and bins and various pieces of furniture out of the barn, and then once everything was rearranged, back in.
