Stereophile January 2016

Stereophile January 2016

2nd Edition

From the JGH Archives: Amplifier Power: How Much is Enough?
Considering the amount of careful research, cautious theorizing and wild speculation that have been lavished on the amplifier power question, we should expect to be considerably closer to the answer in 1962 than we were five years ago. This does not seem to be the case.

From the Archives: Stereophile's Products of 1992
"You're only as good as your most recent gig," was literally drummed into me in my pro musician days; I've found it to be just as true in magazine publishing. No matter how much hard work went into, say, an equipment review, a couple of months down the line that review will be as fresh as yesterday's undunked donut.

Peaceful Easy Feeling
Another Monday, another rock passing, another reappraisal. The death of Glenn Frey, 67, a member of a band widely known for being stronger in the studio than it was on the concert stage (at least until Joe Walsh and Don Felder arrived) brings up two questions.

Stereophile Special Issue: 10 Years of Records to Die For
Audiophiles are often accused of being interested in the gear first, and in music a distant second. Yes, we all love our audio systems, but owning such a system would be pretty pointless if we didn't have music to play on it. Something that Stereophile's reviewers have in common is that, no matter how expensive their audio systems, their collections of recorded music are worth more.

Miles on MoFi (45rpm)
Mobile Fidelity's two-LP, 45rpm reissue of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is one of the most eagerly awaited audiophile jazz reissues, which may seem strange given how many reissues already exist. Yet the 1959 album is that rare thing in any art form.

CES 2016: A Turning Point
See that huge line? It's a small indication of the huge, multi-national, multi-industry group of CES attendees whose numbers--170,000, if the former CEA (Consumer Electronics Association), now CTA (Consumer Technology Association) counts accurately--set new attendance records.

Press Play and Listen
Many of you have seen the posts about Graham Nash touring the high end audio exhibits at CES earlier this month. The experience taught me this: it isn't how good you hear, but how well you listen.

1st Edition

Complete CES 2016 Coverage
Jason Victor Serinus, Herb Reichert, Robert Deutsch, Jon Iverson, and John Atkinson report live from Las Vegas.

Graham Nash's First Stop: Philip O'Hanlon's On a Higher Note Suite at the Mirage
After a quick mid-morning breakfast with Graham Nash that included AudioStream.com's Michael Lavorgna, we headed up to the top floor of the Mirage hotel to start our day at Philip O'Hanlon's On a Higher Note suite.

Graham Nash's Second Stop: dCS/Wilson Audio/Dan D'Agostino Suite at the Mirage
We were clearly off to a good start, so I was wondering what Graham Nash's reaction would be to an all out audiophile assault.

David Bowie (1947-2016)
"I know something is very wrong" "Look up here I’m in heaven." "I’ll be free/ain’t that just like me" Given lines like these, it’s very tempting to read into the lyrics of Black Star that David Bowie knew his end was approaching.

Ziggy Played Guitar
In my high school, Bowie was a living chasm. Sure, he had Mick Ronson’s guitar to toughen things up, but in general when he first appeared in our teenaged consciousness it was as the androgynous, painted Ziggy, which made the less sexually secure amongst us glands-out-of-control a little nervous.

Balanced Audio Technology Rex II line preamplifier
A quarter-century ago, when we were just getting into wine, my wife and I took a trip to Napa Valley. At one premium vineyard, we took a taste from the $20 bottle, then, for the hell of it, a taste from the $50 bottle.

Music in the Round #76
In my last column, in the November 2015 issue, I talked about Marantz's AV8802A preamplifier-processor and two accessories: UpTone Audio's USB Regen, and a DIY battery supply for my DAC. This month's column is all about accessories, and for me that's unusual.

Audio Note CDT One/II CD transport & DAC 2.1x Signature D/A processor
I don't know much about horses, but I've been given to understand that dead ones don't respond to even the severest beating. In light of that, I'll make only this brief statement--Even with the best playback gear of my experience, I don't derive as much pleasure from CDs as I do from LPs.

AudioStreams #9
I eat bits for breakfast. Lunch is a simple bit-sized snack. And dinner is the analog to real food. This has been my routine these past four years as editor of AudioStream.com, where we digest all things computer audio.

Thiel to Launch Live Streaming Studio
Slated to open in March 2016 in Nashville, TN, Thiel Audio's Aurora "Ultra-HD Streaming Studio" is positioned to merge the legacy of Thiel loudspeakers with the vibrancy and "wow factor" of Music City.
