No. ECC85/6AQ8 has a gain of 57 and a transconductance of around 5500 umhos... the 6N1 has a gain of around 35 and a transconductance of around 4500 umhos.
The gain difference will change the circuit operation...
This so called "compatibility" has been bandied about for years... in reality, there IS NO real 1:1 equivalent to the 6N1, in "popular" tubes such as 6DJ8, 6AQ8 or such... NOTHING in current production. That said... the 6BC8/6BS8 and 6BQ7/6BZ7/6CH7 types are just about the same as the 6N1... gain of 35, transconductance of 5500 or so, same pinout as the 6AQ8/6DJ8... but, there's very little data out there on how any of them sound, compared to the 6N1. They're not an exact match, but any of those are MUCH closer than the 6AQ8...
BTW: If you want an exact parametric match to the 6N1... the 5670/2C51/396A types are. However, they're a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WIRING, in the tube pinouts. They will NOT plug in and work, UNLESS the tube socket is rewired...
